Apple has acknowledged a critical bug when using
Panther (OSX 10.3) with Firewire 800 drives. These
drives should be unmounted, powered down, and not
used until a fix is issued. Note that this also covers Firewire
400 drives using the Oxford 922 chipset, since it is backwards
compatible with the Oxford 911 chipset used in most
Firewire 400 drives.

When you're on the bleeding edge, the view is nice, but you can get cut.
