This bomshell of a rumor was put out last night:

I went though the CNet archives this morning and came to one
interesting conclusion -- every "rumor" that CNet has published before
an Apple event has been true. These guys are above the likes of
thinksecret or macosrumors. How high we'll find out Monday.

Let's see how Steve Jobs would explain a switch to Intel CPUs.
Remember, he does not speak like an engineer, or even like an ordinary
person on the street. Read this, visualize Jobs speaking it, stressing
the words in ALL CAPS in his inimitable style.

"The Macintosh is AMAZINGLY popular right now - we've sold more units
than EVER BEFORE. Up to now we've been using the G5, which is an
AMAZING chip IBM developed for us, but we thought "guys, this just
isn't holding up to what our NEW customers expect". So we went to the
BIGGEST processor manufacturer IN THE WORLD and had them design the
FASTEST DESKTOP PROCESSOR in the WORLD for us. It is based on their
MOST SUCCESSFUL architecture EVER, and it's EVEN FASTER than the
original G5.

We present to you... the G6.

The G6 is an AMAZING chip. It has almost THREE HUNDRED MILLION
TRANSISTORS - I don't know how they count them - and up to TWO
symmetric cores with TWO MEGABYTES of cache. And what's more, the G6
is UP TO TWICE AS FAST as a single G5. That is simply AMAZING
performance, and it's shipping next year."
</RDF OFF>

If Apple were really to switch, a G6 would essentially be a
next-generation Pentium M, not P4, not Xeon.

Intel has pulled of this before -- future Intel chips are based off
the Pentium M instead of the P4. And the M is a P3 derivative. Thanks
to my Honeywell job that forced me to research the Intel processor
roadmap, I believe that we made a good choice with the Pentium M, even
if AMD makes better Intel chips than Intel itself. The ideal
IBM-Apple-AMD alliance only works in a world where the best technology
wins. We are not in that world.

So, when is Ron going to buy a G6? :-)

Alex

Alex, Just as I have some trouble believing that the Pentium M laptop is faster than my dual cpu Itanium mini tower from Dell, it is a big leap for Apple to...
